Warm Up: 1. Go to www.etymonline.com. 2. Type in the word ‘dictionary.’ 3. Write an organized paragraph about its’ origin.

Guided Practice: Instruction on how to fill out a vocabulary square. Retrieve worksheet in class.

 

1.       Etymology-history and origin of a word with emphasis on how the word has evolved since its’ conception. Go to above mentioned website to find the etymology. The 2 parts of etymology that are to be used for this section of the vocabulary square are DATE and LANGUAGE. The date of the word is the earliest year for which we have a surviving written record. The language is the language of origin. So the etymology of a word may be as follows: Latin, 16c. The ‘c.’ stands for century or ‘circa,’ which means ‘about,’ when next to a specific year such as 1620c, i.e. around the year 1620.

Part of Speech: Noun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb. Etc?

2.       Variation, Synonyms, Antonyms: Words that mean the same and words that mean the opposite.

3.       Symbol/logo/icon: visual representation of the word

4.       Definition: go to dictionary.com or a dictionary

5.       Sentence: Use the word properly in a sentence. The sentence should be appropriate for your level of education.

Independent Practice: Fill out 1 vocabulary square on each of the four words: Sagacious, Salubrious, Schism, and Sedulous.

Journal: Free write

HW: Purchase Lord of the Flies; Rd Ch 1 AND do 4 vocabulary squares on the following words: Piquant, Meretricious, Inimitable, and Poignant.
