ENG 10
Warm Up: Complete a vocabulary square for the word 'vocabulary.'
Guided Practice:
We studied how to analyze a word. There can be three parts to a word: root words, prefixes, and suffixes. Every word has a root word. Sometimes a word will have just a root word, a prefix and a root word, a root word and a suffix, or ALL three. Prefixes and suffixes are called affixes. Affixes are morphemes. Morphemes are the smallest unit of grammar that has meaning. In other words, we can not break down a morpheme any more. The word 'inimitable' can be broken down into three parts: in-imit-able. However 'in' is the prefix and cannot be broken down any further.
Example: Prehistoric
Pre=prefix, meaning before
histori= history, root word, meaning history
ic= suffix, meaning, related to the science of
full meaning= related to the science of before history
Independent Practice: Analyze the word 'subservient'. Find the prefix, suffix, and root word.
