Classwork:
1. Notes on To Kill a Mockingbird background.
The story takes place in the
fictional Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s.
The novel follows a 6 year old girl
named Scout, her older brother Jem (10), and their imaginative friend
Dill.
They play, joke, and entertain
themselves during the summer when Dill comes to visit.
One of their favorite pastimes is
trying to get a peek at “Boo,” a scary man with a mysterious past who lives
next door.
Later, the novel gets more serious
as a Black man in the town named Tom is convicted of a crime and Scout and Jem’s
father, Atticus is chosen to defend him.
The town shows its true colors
about the issue of race.
The novel is about childhood,
growing up, and learning some important lessons about courage, justice, and
doing what’s right.
