ENG 9

*We started our novel today, To Kill A Mockingbird.
Warm Up: Read the following quote. Do you agree OR disagree? Why?

Classwork:
1. Cornell Notes on To Kill a Mockingbird background.
The story takes place in the fictional Southern town of Maycomb, Alabama in the 1930’s.
The novel follows a 6 year old girl named Scout, her older brother Jem (10), and their imaginative friendDill.
They play, joke, and entertain themselves during the summer when Dill comes to visit.
One of their favorite pastimes is trying to get a peek at “Boo,” a scary man with a mysterious past who lives next door.
Later, the novel gets more serious as a Black man in the town named Tom is convicted of a crime and Scout and Jem’sfather, Atticus is chosen to defend him.
The town shows its true colors about the issue of race.
The novel is about childhood, growing up, and learning some important lessons about courage, justice, and doing what’s right.
2. Audio Guide- Listen to the first ten minutes of the Audio Guide on the following website (http://www.neabigread.org/books/mockingbird/media/). Answer these questions in your notes: What do you learn about Harper Lee from her biographer, Charles J. Shields, and other contributors? What are the three most important points on the Audio Guide?
3. Group Work: Read one of two Essays about the author: "How the novel came to be" OR "Harper Lee." Answer the 8 questions that come with the essay. You will need to retrieve this worksheet in class.
Journal: The novel begins with an epigraph by Charles Lamb: “Lawyers, I suppose, were children once.”Based on what you’ve learned from the Audio Guide, why do you think Lee chose this quote to begin her novel? Think about how this statement relates to what you have learnedabout Lee’s life.
Homework: Read Ch 1 of TKAM and answer questions provided on the worksheet. You will need to retrieve this worksheet in class.
